It’s perfect on salads, but this HOMEMADE THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING is so much more!

Without a doubt, this is the HOMEMADE THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING we’ve all been craving, with three additional you-gotta-try-this features. First, it’s extremely easy to make; after gathering the ingredients, all you’ll need is a medium bowl and a whisk. Next, it’s very tasty and yes, this homemade dressing recipe has that classic taste we enjoyed in our youth. Last thing, and we just gotta tell you, this dressing recipe screams “cottage weekend”. Why? Legend has it the dressing was first created by Sophia LaLonde to accompany her husband’s shore dinner, a traditional seafood feast popular in the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River, prime cottage country. This may end up our official salad dressing for every weekend at the cottage, just saying!

Before listing a few things to keep in mind while making it, how about two green thumbs up for all you salad lovers out there—you’re our kind of people. We made our favourite HEALTHY EVERYDAY SALAD to show off our dressing for this post, but the options are endless. Make sure to click this LINK to see our round-up of the MOST POPULAR SALAD RECIPES from our site. You’ll find a wide range of options like a terrific WEDGE SALAD, this classic French SALAD NIÇOISE, and our hugely popular COBB SALAD with chicken, boiled egg and avocado. Additionally, there are quite a few healthy creations like our AVOCADO, CUCUMBER and FETA SALAD, this crowd-pleasing COTTAGE SALAD, and our green salad that works as a side, SEARED ZUCCHINI with lemon and herbs.

Now, let’s continue with this wonderful HOMEMADE THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING:

The various ingredients needed to make a delicious Homemade Thousand Island Dressing.

INGREDIENTS

Don’t be surprised that you only need a few necessary ingredients to make this rich and creamy dressing. Unlike other dressings, you won’t need olive oil, vegetable oil, red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar. You also won’t need honey, garlic, cheese or an assortment of fresh herbs. Instead, you’ll simply need mayonnaise, tomato ketchup and a favourite sweet pickle relish, plus paprika, lemon juice, kosher salt and black pepper. Last thing, the essential ingredient, white onion. For best results, you’ll need ¼ cup of a sweet white onion, finely minced. Don’t worry about its sharp flavour, though; the creaminess of the mayo softens the onion once everything is combined.

FRESH SALAD

Check out the fresh veggies and herbs that go into this HEALTHY EVERYDAY SALAD. We’re going to suggest you assemble your favourite ingredients, remembering we’re giving you free rein on this. Enjoy romaine lettuce, Boston, iceberg, spinach, Belgian endive or radicchio? Add ‘em. Are you on a cucumber, celery, tomato, bell pepper, carrot, parsnip, radish, broccoli, cauliflower or sweet pea kick right now? Add them too. Same with fresh herbs; fresh dill, mint, basil, tarragon, parsley and chives only add more flavour to your salads. We know you’ll love crafting a salad of your favourite veggies, and this dressing works with everything.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING

The directions are so simple. Unlike our FRENCH DRESSING or this herb-forward CREAMY GREEN GODDESS DRESSING, we’re not using a food processor or immersion blender. We’re also not shaking the dressing together in a sealed mason jar as we do when we make a traditional CREAMY ITALIAN DRESSING. Instead, you can just whisk or stir all of the ingredients together in a small bowl or medium-sized container. You can make the dressing in advance, storing it in an airtight container, keeping it in the fridge until using.

DRESSING A SALAD

How to dress a salad is an important skill we think worth mentioning. In our experience, it’s best to dress only the amount you think you’ll be able to eat. We find that saving a dressed salad never works, losing texture once the greens and veggies wilt in the dressing’s moisture. The flavour we’re after only happens when a salad is freshly made. Two options then, depending on your preference: you can drizzle the dressing on a smaller quantity of salad, then toss and serve, or present the salad without the dressing, leaving guests to add their preferred quantity to individual portions.

OTHER DRESSING RECIPES

A few additional homemade dressing recipes worthy of your attention are this FRENCH DRESSING, which is a personal favourite and crowd-pleaser, as is our RANCH DRESSING. We also have our famous ASIAN SALAD DRESSING. If you’d rather something lighter, try this DIJON VINAIGRETTE or our zippy JAPANESE DRESSING. Like we always say, every great salad deserves an equally good dressing, and with these options, you simply cannot go wrong.

Easy smash burgers with secret sauce ready to be enjoyed

ENJOY

We explained how to dress a salad, but this homemade THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING can be enjoyed in other ways too. In keeping with the history of the dressing, serve a dollop or three next to our SEARED CHAR or HEALTHY FISH AND CHIPS. Making SMASH BURGERS? Stir a bit of our famous ORIGINAL BBQ SAUCE or SPICY BBQ SAUCE in with this dressing, then add a dollop as a burger condiment. You can also serve it with a classic TUNA MELT or our HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS. Who knew a salad dressing could sub in so perfectly when subbed in as a condiment? As mentioned in the instructions, after making this easy recipe, keep it in a jar or airtight container in the refrigerator, enjoying it within 10 days. YUM!
