This flavourful mulled wine recipe is memorable for the way it’s enjoyed; ladled warm into mugs or glasses. It’s quite possibly the most perfect beverage to savour and enjoy snuggled up with friends on a cold winter’s day. We also love how the slow simmering of this spiced wine fills the home with pleasing aromas. It’s just the thing to add a festive feel for Christmas, Hanukkah and the holidays.
Before listing a few tips on making it, a friendly reminder; this MULLED WINE PUNCH contains alcohol, so you must be of legal drinking age to enjoy. If you are having a glass, kindly also remember to enjoy responsibly. Thank you!
Here are some tips on making our fabulous MULLED WINE PUNCH:
The maple syrup and dark brown sugar give the punch rich, caramel notes.
INGREDIENTS
We’re giving you free rein to select a couple of the key ingredients for this mulled wine recipe. You can add your favourite wine and brandy. Ideally, look for a favourite dry, fruity red wine like cabernet sauvignon, merlot or pinot noir. Although we did try a version of this recipe using white wine and apple cider, this red wine version is way better. For the BRANDY, we went with a well-rounded VSOP, but Cognac and Armagnac will work too.
Don’t boil your punch. Warming it slowly builds a more pleasing flavour profile.
The other things of note in our ingredient list include assorted spices, dark brown sugar and maple syrup. The sugar and syrup both add subtle caramel notes to the cocktail while the spices offer rich aromas and warm, spicy flavours on the tongue. Our spice mix includes cardamom, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice and star anise, but feel free to add others such as nutmeg, ginger and coriander. Make this recipe to suit your taste.
Adding citrus to the recipe brightens the flavours.
GARNISH
The garnish for our MULLED WINE PUNCH includes lemon, orange and fresh cranberries -slices of apple and pear can also be included if you’d like. The lemon is added to the punch as it slowly warms; we love how the citrus flavouring pairs with the brown sugar and maple syrup to brighten the wine’s base notes. Adding a slice of orange, a cinnamon stick, a few cranberries and perhaps strands of lemon zest into each mug or glass is a final festive touch.
Enjoy this lovely bevvy on an especially cold day
SERVE
Serving this warmed libation could not be easier; ladle it into glasses, garnish and enjoy! One thing worth mentioning here is please do not bring the mulled wine to a boil. It’s best to slowly bring it to temperature on moderate heat and serve it warm, not hot.
