Craving a HEALTHY SMOOTHIE RECIPE? This A-B-C smoothie is a lesson in perfection!
Freshly prepared smoothies, like the kind we order in a health food store or juice bar, have long been a favourite beverage of mine. Whether I’m in the city or up in cottage country, these libations packed with vitamins, minerals and other vital nutrients are always a welcome trip. But let’s face it, having a freshly prepared smoothie in a fancy spot can get expensive. Our solution: make your own. They are easy to do, save us some cash, and using fresh, natural ingredients makes them good for us too!
Now, if making smoothies is your thing, you’ve come to the right place; between the website and our YouTube channel, we have tons to choose from. Favourites include this SPINACH-BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE, our punchy CHERRY-MINT SMOOTHIE, this STRAWBERRY TROPICAL TREAT and then a savoury smoothie that tastes like blended GAZPACHO, complete with avocado garnish. Amazing!
Here’s how to make this HEALTHY SMOOTHIE RECIPE:
INGREDIENTS FOR A HEALTHY SMOOTHIE
This recipe and VIDEO outlines the A-B-C’s of a great-tasting fruit and vegetable mix — apples, bananas and carrots. Something magical happens when these ingredients come together, and this smoothie recipe proves it. We also love the addition of unsweetened coconut and almond milk. Then, the proverbial cherry on this healthy smoothie recipe, we’re suggesting you add a scoop of protein powder into the blender before mixing. Doing so will help build those muscles.
APPLES, BANANAS AND CARROTS
As I mentioned, when smoothies are made with wholesome, fresh ingredients, they contain loads of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. In this case, it’s all about the A-B-C’s – easy to remember when you’re buying ingredients at the market or grocery store. Apples are highly nutritious, fibre-rich, and support heart health, aid weight loss, and help manage blood sugar. Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin B6, fibre and manganese, plus they provide a quick energy boost. Lastly, carrots are a nutrient-dense root vegetable with high levels of beta-carotene, fibre and antioxidants. Together, these fruits and vegetables all promote good health.
ALMOND MILK AND PROTEIN POWDER
For this freshly prepared smoothie recipe, we used unsweetened almond milk and a favourite whey-based protein powder. Almond milk is a low-calorie, dairy-free, and lactose-free plant-based beverage high in calcium, vitamin D, and rich in vitamin E. Adding protein powder into this smoothie helps with building muscle and boosting immunity while also reducing inflammation and lowering blood pressure. Of course, we know everyone may have specific preferences, so feel free to make this smoothie recipe your own. Try it using oat milk, soy milk, coconut water or another liquid. Swap the protein powder with things like a greens supplement, almond butter or collagen powder. Then, for fresh fruit and vegetables, the sky’s the limit!
MAKE AND SERVE
“Bottoms up” is the key to maximizing the benefits of your homemade smoothie. Experts all say the same thing: consume a freshly prepared smoothie right after you blend it. This will ensure all those healthy vitamins and minerals get right to work delivering the good stuff straight to your system.
