This delicious CREAMY BLUE CHEESE DIP goes with everything!

Up here in cottage country, hearing someone call out, “Who’s up for a dip?!” is music to my ears. Half the time it means we’re donning swimsuits and trunks and jumping in the lake, but sometimes it means someone is upping their flavour game by crafting a tasty, luxurious dip. Case in point, this fabulous CREAMY BLUE CHEESE DIP.

Here are the reasons this recipe consistently ranks amongst our top five most popular dip recipes ever:

  • It’s easy to prepare, ready in just five minutes.
  • It has a pleasant creamy cheese flavour.
  • You can make it using any of your favourite fresh herbs.
  • It’s a versatile dip that can be served with potato or tortilla chips, assorted vegetables, wings, ribs, hot dogs and burgers.
  • It can double as a blue cheese dressing when you need a salad dressing in a pinch.

These points whet your appetite? Here are some tips on making this CREAMY BLUE CHEESE DIP:

Ingredients needed to stir up a tangy, CREAMY BLUE CHEESE DIP.

INGREDIENTS

This delicious dip recipe is made with just a handful of ingredients. Look for the cheese and sour cream in the dairy section, lemon, shallot and herbs the produce section and mayo in the condiment aisle. Because recipes often call for sour cream, lemon juice and mayo, I always have them on hand. Trust us on this; make this recipe once, and you’ll soon be keeping blue cheese at the ready too. It’s a make-again-and-again kind of recipe, for sure!

Crumbled blue cheese and a wedge of roquefort blue cheese.

BLUE CHEESE

BLUE CHEESE is truly the star of this recipe and we’re giving you a few options on the types of blue cheese we found to work best. First, if time is of the essence, look for a crumbled blue cheese at your local supermarket or grocery store. One small container of these blue cheese crumbles should meet the one cup required for this recipe.

For our dip, we used beautiful Roquefort Black Label, a raw sheep’s milk cheese from France, and we love its tangy flavour and pungent aroma. Head HERE to learn more about this unique and distinctly flavoured cheese.

Additional cheese we’ve used and enjoyed include Stilton and Gorgonzola. If you’re in the market for a more uniquely flavoured dip, head to a specialty cheese shop and ask for recommendations. Pro tip: if using a large wedge of cheese, freeze it! Seriously, blue cheeses are creamy, and freezing it first makes grating it way easier.

Psst! Yeah you, the one who doesn’t like blue cheese! Make our fabulous WHIPPED FETA recipe instead.

Bowls of mayonnaise, sour cream and buttermilk.

DAIRY AND MAYONNAISE

Now, although the blue cheese itself is rich and creamy, this dip gets even creamier thanks to the addition of sour cream and mayonnaise. Although you may be tempted to swap the sour cream with Greek yogurt or a low-fat sour cream, we say, don’t. This dip recipe loves the texture and tang of full-fat sour cream. Same with the mayonnaise, stick to a real mayo product for best results.

Assorted fresh herbs include chives, tarragon and fresh dill.

FRESH HERBS

We’re suggesting you make this dip your own by adding your favourite freshly chopped herbs into the mix. We’ve tried the recipe using fresh dill, tarragon, chives, parsley and basil. Happy to report, they all work and each lends a different but pleasing flavour to this CREAMY BLUE CHEESE DIP. Oh, and all the home gardeners out there are going to jump for joy when they read this! For best results, use fresh herbs from the garden. They always taste better. Woot!

STIR TOGETHER

The directions on how to make this dip recipe are very straightforward. Simply place everything into the bowl and stir to combine. After that first stir, you might want to also add 1 tablespoon of buttermilk, listed as optional. Watch the VIDEO attached to this recipe where we show you the consistency of the dip made without the milk and the dip after milk is added. Once you’re happy with the consistency, season with salt and pepper and you’re ready to enjoy. We suggest storing the dip in a covered bowl or airtight container and keeping it in the refrigerator until you serve. Give it a quick stir with a spatula or spoon before transferring it into serving bowls.

HOW TO ENJOY CREAMY BLUE CHEESE DIP RECIPE

We listed a few options of how we serve this dip recipe at the start of this post. First and foremost, we love going old school and partnering it with an array of fresh vegetables. Back in the day, blue cheese was often served at restaurants with celery sticks, cucumber and carrot sticks. Additional veggies that taste really great with blue cheese include broccoli, asparagus, beans, snap peas, cauliflower, radishes and bell peppers. Truth be told, all vegetables can be served with it.

Next up, where are my wing-and-rib fans at? Ready for game day? This pairing is especially popular at sports bars and roadhouses where GRILLED WINGS and BBQ RIBS are served. I had family up a few weeks back and they all loved our perfectly prepared buffalo wings, dripping with BBQ SAUCE and finished with a dunk in the BLUE CHEESE DIP. You heard it here first, we’re talking Terrifically Tasty, with two capital Ts! Bonus suggestion: serve this dip with RIBEYE STEAKS, HAMBURGERS and HOT DOGS, too.

Last suggestion: chips! We suggest dividing the dip into two bowls and placing them out when friends are hanging out. Partner the dip with tortillas chips, potato chips or corn chips and watch them devour everything in record time. When something is this tasty, it disappears pretty quick.
