This recipe for CARAMELIZED ONIONS is pretty sweet!
Something really wonderful happens when we thinly slice a favourite onion and slowly cook it down – amber-coloured, richly flavoured CARAMELIZED ONIONS. We’re adding them to toast, sandwiches and crackers as a tasty condiment that can really go with everything.
Here’s how to make them:
SO SIMPLE
With only five ingredients, this is yet another recipe that proves great flavour can come from combining even the simplest ingredients. In this case, we’re putting sweet onions to good use, drawing out their natural sweetness by caramelizing them. Ultimately any yellow or sweet onion will work, but we found Vidalia or Walla Wallas provide the best flavour.
SLOW COOK
The trick to making really memorable and flavourful CARAMELIZED ONIONS is to cook them slowly on low heat, so though this recipe isn’t challenging, it might test your patience. We also suggest you check on them and stir frequently to prevent overcooking. Slow and steady always wins this race.
SERVICE, PLEASE
Although our minds often go to the usual suspects when it comes to condiments – things like ketchups, mustards, hot sauces and savoury jellies – making CARAMELIZED ONIONS opens up a whole new bunch of options. Try them on these ROAST BEEF HOAGIES, our JUICY BURGERS or serve them next to our PORK TENDERLOIN or even HOMEMADE MEATLOAF. We have a funny feeling you’ll enjoy them just the way we do, with everything!
CARAMELIZED ONIONS are a fabulous side to your next savoury dish!
