FALLING FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR
I’m writing this month’s newsletter from the sunroom at the cottage, looking out onto the lake, remembering the summer that was! Now the leaves are changing colours and the loons coax their chicks to stay airborne in anticipation of their upcoming migration to the coast. With the days growing shorter and a serious chill in the air, I think I finally have to accept one sobering fact – no more swimming in the lake this year. Summer’s officially over.
THE SUMMER OF ’18
Carol and I will certainly look back on the summer of 2018 as being one for the Weekend at the Cottage record books. It was especially rewarding to witness our food, drink and entertaining suggestions being put to good use by you, our dear friends!
Who knew you’d be so keen to make our BREAD & BUTTER PICKLES? Oh, and if only I had a loonie for every time someone said: “We made and LOVED your family recipe for ANGEL FOOD CAKE!”… I guess it all comes down to keeping things real, right? No surprise then that our PORK BELLY SANDWICH has become everyone’s new favourite weekend sammie. Yup, sure was a fabulous summer!
With the arrival of fall, those of us living in North America have the perfect opportunity to express some serious love to our friends and family over the next few weeks and months. Whether you’re celebrating Canadian or American Thanksgiving, or both, here are a few ideas perfect for the occasion.
Start your holiday get-together with a few recipes that offer up some distinctly fall flavours – our FALL PUNCH and our FALL SALAD are both seriously yummy. For the main event, what about our never-fail, always remarkable SALT-BRINED TURKEY partnered with our GARLIC MASHED POTATOES and LIME-GINGER GLAZED CARROTS.
New this year is our SAUSAGE DRESSING, and make sure to try my friend Kris’ absolutely glorious BEAN CASSEROLE. Finally, we have two choices for dessert: our fabulous PARSNIP CAKE and my all-time favourite Thanksgiving indulgence, homemade SPICED PUMPKIN PIE.
We’re getting super excited about what’s coming up in the next few months. Carol and I can hardly wait to head back to Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge for this year’s 30th Anniversary celebration of CHRISTMAS IN NOVEMBER. I’m looking forward to hosting the event, but I’m especially looking forward to sharing holiday ideas during my classes. The topic this year is a sweet and scrumptious HOLIDAY COOKIE EXCHANGE. Four seasonal cookie recipes plus packaging ideas for your ultimate holiday gift-giving moments.
Don’t worry if you can’t travel all the way out west to attend Canada’s premier food and beverage festival, just make sure you’re signed up to one or more of our social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. We’ll be sending updates from Jasper while we’re there so that everyone has enough time to make some sweet treats for the holidays.
Speaking about holiday cheer, we’ll be hitting the snowy trail during the latter part of November to share holiday ideas with our friends at CHCH Hamilton, CTV Kitchener and Rogers Daytime Ottawa. We’ll list showtimes and dates in our November newsletter.
This time of year always offers a chance for a bit of reflection. Whether you’re tackling a long list of autumn chores in your cottage, home or garden, spending quality time in the company of dear friends and family, or just taking a long, solitary walk on a quiet country road, I’d like to suggest that we all take a moment to stop and count our blessings – there’s so much to be thankful for.
