To set the tone for this month’s newsletter, a reality check – Carol and I were at a food and beverage event a few days ago when a young woman (yes, Johanna, I AM telling this story!) came up and introduced herself. She then said with a big smile, “Weekend at the Cottage? You two MUST be excited that spring’s just around the corner!”

Johanna, you nailed it! Spring is just weeks away and we couldn’t be more excited. Here’s to warmer weather, longer days and more time for Carol and I and the team at Weekend at the Cottage to do what we love doing most, making every day feel like it’s the weekend.

Here’s some stuff to look forward to:


We had a ton of fun driving through a snowy windstorm at the end of last month to visit CHCH and CTV Kitchener. You can head to the MORNING LIVE or NEWS AT NOON websites to see my segments about COMFORT FOOD.

Liza's Brownies

We’re looking forward to our next appearance at St. Lawrence Market, a food lovers dream, located on the southwest corner of Front and Jarvis streets in Toronto. Drop by the Organic Farmer’s Tent on Saturday, March 16 from 8 a.m. until noon. Look for us in the southern kitchen where we’ll be handing out samples of our incredible gluten-free chocolate brownies. We’re also looking for feedback from some lucky taste testers on our crunchy garlic dill pickles. Chocolate and pickles – talk about a classic taste combination, lol. See you there!


Easy Asian Slaw

The last few months have been all about flavourful food and drink offerings that are perfect for the northern winter months. We’re super pleased you enjoyed two of our newest salad sensations, our EASY ASIAN SLAW (ready in under 5 minutes, NOT joking) and our CRUNCHY SALAD WITH APPLE. Thanks too for trying our wonderful and elegant POACHED SALMON with HOMEMADE MAYONNAISE, and our fabulously tender and juicy OVEN-ROASTED PORK TENDERLOIN. Our recipes over the next few months are sure to make you and your guests very happy! Get ready for a slow-simmered EASY LAMB STEW made with a superior Belgian beer. Wait until you see our FRENCH ONION CHICKEN main course idea and a second look at our heady BLUE CHEESE DIP. Something else we know you’ll enjoy is our moist and crumbly ZUCCHINI LOAF made with a unique and unexpected spice profile. One thing’s for sure, your taste buds will be springing forward as we wait for the weather to improve!

Last thing this month is my story about the peanut. I recently discovered I have a peanut; in fact, I have quite a few. I bet you’ve got some too!

So… have I gone nuts? Pun fully intended. (Although us foodies know it’s really a legume.)

A ‘peanut’, in this case, is something that needs to get done but, we’re procrastinating. For me, things like writing our posts, shooting and editing our videos and scheduling our content are all ‘peanuts’. Other peanuts include doing the laundry, grocery shopping, cleaning out the mudroom, sending out a thank you note, setting aside time to catch up with a friend.

Need a quick feel-good fix? Push the peanut. Just pick one that’s been sitting there untouched for a while and push it forward. Do it! You’ll feel great when you do!

Clean the garage, paint that room, write that post, make that salad, give the dog a bath! Trust me – pushing one or more of your peanuts is SO rewarding and can even be life-affirming. Best of all, you’ll soon realize you’re actually accomplishing a lot! Doing so will make you feel good and that’s what we’re all about.
