WHO’S READY FOR A VACATION?
I’ve just returned from a mini vacation – six glorious days hanging out with some amazing friends. It was a totally different vibe than the cottage: at a beach house, sand between my toes, the constant sound of waves crashing, seagulls, shells and heavy, salty ocean air.
No surprise that I’ve returned energized, rejuvenated and even more excited about what’s coming up for Weekend at the Cottage. Right now we’re shooting a bunch of new videos before it’s Carol’s turn at a vacation, heading down south for a few days.
Wait a second – both of us taking our much-deserved breaks and making time for a bit of rest and a recharge? Vacations always bring out the best in us – so get ready for tons of new ideas and tasty things coming soon!
If you can’t get away just yet but could still use a little reset, here are a few things that might help:
As I headed out for my vacation, I overheard a woman at the airport say, “Gross, do you believe it’s already August next week?” Her words were a bit sobering, and although I joined her pity party, it was only for a few seconds. Then I gave my head a shake and reminded myself how it’s all about perspective.
Why not celebrate the arrival of August rather than be bummed out by it?
Remember, ‘tis the season for buttery peaches & cream corn, beefsteak and heirloom tomatoes just begging to be thick-sliced for BLTs. Our salads will be jammed with the finest seasonal vegetables, plus a healthy mix of glorious greens, fragrant herbs and luscious fruit. Oh yeah, and the fruit – cherries, plums, apricots, peaches, grapes and so many more!
Still bummed that it’s August? Not for long – wait until you try our GRILLED TUNA SALAD, our higher than high ANGEL FOOD CAKE and our take on PANZANELLA, a traditional bread salad. All are fabulous and delicious!
Hey August, what took you so long?
WHAT’S YOUR LOCAL?
One of the things we believe in, practice and recommend is to buy local. It’s all about supporting your local farmers, growers and purveyors, the wonderful folks working so hard to bring superior products to market. Let’s show them how thankful we are by buying it and supporting them.
Second, the things offered locally will taste better than anything else out there. These items haven’t been processed and packaged, nor have they been shipped great distances, so they are fresh and appetizing too. Good flavours + good looks = good food!
Speaking from my experiences even just this past month alone, I had a number of great moments in the cottage kitchen thanks to picking up ingredients that were locally grown. I’m so proud of our GOOSEBERRY JAM and my makes-me-cry-every-time WILD BLUEBERRY PIE, both of which prove that great things happen when we use the best ingredients. Worth a look at if you missed them the first time around.
My friends take a lot of work – wait let me rephrase that – my friends take on a lot of work. It was during my time away with them that I remembered what I enjoy doing most together – hanging out in the kitchen, chatting and making a meal together.
There’s something quite magical about it; one person preps the veggies, another works the stove, one may be staying on top of the dishwashing duties while another’s sole responsibility is to refill wine glasses – that person becomes the most popular!
It is that effortless, relaxed, authentic approach to friendship that always yields meals worthy of great praise, as much for their taste as for their rejuvenating, much-needed soul food!
This is our hope for each and all as we warmly, happily and confidently welcome in August. Let’s make this month count as we prepare and enjoy delicious food made with love in our hearts in the company of friends.
