Our good friends Paul and Anahita Belanger sent us the perfect gift for Thanksgiving – two bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Belanger Organic Farms. Thanksgiving always reminds me to be THANKFUL for GOOD FRIENDS!
It was Easter weekend, two years ago, and a group of us were gathered to celebrate the arrival of spring. In walked Paul and Anahita with the most incredible news. They had just purchased a farm and were eager to tell us all about it. With three growing boys, a rambunctious Ganaraskan named Bob, and a deep-seeded love and respect for Mother Nature and the great outdoors, purchasing a farm seemed like the perfect decision. Paul and Anahita were making their lifelong dream a reality and we were overjoyed!
Belanger Organic Farms is located in Hillsdale, Ontario, and has been in operation for over 65 years. It is comprised of a group of farms, each owned by different members of the Belanger family. The entire operation is overseen by Peter Belanger and his son Joshua, who are both eager to share their farming knowledge and skill. Paul, Anahita and their sons are just the latest members to join this family endeavour. How amazing!
The farm offers a wide range of certified organic produce, as well as organically-fed beef and lamb, plus award-winning meat pies. I especially love their FarmClub program where members sign up for a weekly FarmClub Box filled with a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, meats and pies. To learn more about this exciting program, visit their website.
Our gift from Paul and Anahita included: kale, beets, white onions, spaghetti squash, white potatoes, peppers, acorn squash and a sugar pumpkin. After marvelling at the variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, I decided to make PUMPKIN PIE! The finished pie yielded a delicious flavour that was truly off-the-charts!
When it comes to food preparation, let’s do ourselves and the planet a great big favour and use certified organic EVERYTHING! Hats off to our good friends at Belanger Organic Farms for reminding us to taste the difference!
Listening to great music is an important part of every Weekend at the Cottage! I listened to Wide Open Spaces – Dixie Chicks while writing this post and thinking about how perfect farm life is for Paul and Anahita. Visit iTunes to add this great album to your collection.
